Why do we use a diaphragm seal with the pressure transmitter? How does it work, and what are its advantages?

Diaphragm seals are specifically designed to isolate the Pressure instrument from process medium it acts as a barrier between the two and avoid direct contact.

But why?

Well! Normally we may not need it, but in many industrial applications, the pressure transmitter involves working in an extreme environment where the direct contact between the process medium and instrument can result in inaccurate output and damage of the sensor.

What is the extreme environment?

Let’s say the process media is corrosive. In such a case, the measuring element needs to be isolated and protected from it. In other instances, the nature of the medium can be highly fibrous or viscous, which can cause different issues such as constriction of spaces in the measuring instrument.

Again, there are many applications where the medium tends to crystallize or polymerize.

The temperature of the medium can be so high that it heats the measuring instrument, developing conditions that can result in incorrect pressure readings.

Diaphragm seal helps in all these adverse conditions.

Besides countering the effect of all these unfavorable process mediums, we use diaphragm seals to avoid dead spaces in the measuring instrument in the production plants, manufacturing process products that demand hygienic conditions.

In certain conditions, the medium used is toxic, and any leakage can lead to environmental hazards. Diaphragm seals, popularly known as remote seal pressure transmitters, are used to nullify the high changes of chemical incompatibility between the components that hold the potential to yield incorrect pressure reading and beat the purpose of using a pressure measuring instrument.

Are accuracy and safety the only benefits that we get with diaphragm seals?

Let’s take a look. Diaphragm seals typically comprise a metal, TEFLON or elastomer diaphragm mounted between two housings to form a closed system and sealed to prevent leakage of process gases or fluids.

The entire space between the pressure measuring instrument and this diaphragm is filled with instrument oil or other suitable oil. When the process pressure is applied, the diaphragm exerts equal pressure on the instrument side of the seal producing a reading on the process instrument.

A capillary is often connected between this pressure measuring instrument and the diaphragm seal to mitigate the temperature effects on the measuring instrument that can arise from the hot fluid. The capillary positively influences the overall system response.

These diaphragm seals are used across most of the industries. Now you may be in the impression that one seal system fits all applications, but that’s not true.

They serve differently in every industry. In food and pharmaceutical industries, diaphragm seals are used in processes that require the protection of process fluid from the pressure sensor to maintain the purity of the liquid, such as milk.

In the beverage industry, diaphragm seals are used to avoid the high changes of contamination that can arise with the contact of the media and pressure instruments.

On the other hand, in the pneumatic systems, these seals control the slightest change in the pressure.
