Types and Advantages of Differential Pressure Gauge

12 May , 2021 Differential Pressure Gauges

Differential pressure gauge shows the difference in pressure between two given points, often expressed as DP or ΔP; it is an essential pressure reading found in almost all industrial process systems.

Measuring differential pressure is essential wherever small differences in pressure can have a significant effect, such as monitoring pressure drop across filters, strainers, separators, valves and pumps, displaying liquid levels in tanks, detecting system leaks, and measuring liquid flow.

Applications include clean rooms, heat exchangers, refineries, petrochemical, chemical plants and power plants.

Why is differential pressure significant? An operator may want to perform maintenance of a particular pipeline or a duct carrying airflow at any given time. So, by monitoring the differential pressure, one can understand the product’s effectiveness in use, therefore, ensuring that the product is safe and working under standard conditions.

Advantages / Uses of Differential Pressure Gauges:

1. Differential Pressure Gauges for Filter Application

Most popular application for differential pressure gauges is filtration monitoring. As a filter cartridge starts to become obstructed with contaminants, the pressure between the inlet and outlet ports increases and efficiency drops.

When the differential pressure reaches a certain limit, the operator knows it is time to change the filter, keeping the process running smoothly and efficiently and preventing damage to the system. Similarly, a differential pressure gauge can be used to detect scale buildup in pipes and pumps.

2. Monitors The Flow Rate Of A Liquid

Differential pressure gauges are a less expensive and simple option against heavy large and expensive flowmeters which are used to measure flow of media inside the pipe.

An orifice plate, venturi, or flow nozzle are used to reduce the diameter inside the pipe. A differential pressure gauge can be connected to measure the difference in pressure across the orifice to determine the flow rate. High Pressure Port is connected on input side and Low Pressure Port on output side.

3. Tank Liquid Level Measurement And Cryogenic Applications

In open tank high pressure port of DP gauge is connected to the bottom of the tank and low pressure post is vented to the atmosphere. The DP gauge indicates the height of the liquid in tank.

By connection high side to the bottom low side to the top gauge measures the difference in gas pressure from the total pressure to provide a much accurate liquid level reading for tanks measuring liquid Oxygen, Nitrogen and similar cryogenic media. This can be very cost effective solution.

4. Detecting Build Up Using DP Gauges

By monitoring pressure changes across filters, valves, or machines, DP gauges can indicate any deposit build-up in the system. This helps in the smooth functioning of the system and promotes the optimal functioning of a system.

5. Detection of Leak Using DP Gauges

The DP between a potentially leaking vessel and a reference vessel can be determine if leakage is occurring. This can save time and provide accurate measurement over long waiting time for drop in pressure in standard pressure gauge.

Types of DP Gauges

DP gauges are of three main types Piston-style, Diaphragm type, and Bellows differential pressure gauges. For the system’s good performance, DP gauges can be selected based on their distinct features, ambient applications, and pressure differentials and Static Pressures.
